The Right Side
of Righteousness
For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one;
much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift
of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:17
Righteousness is in no way passive. Instead, employ the righteousness of God to set the highest standard in every area of your life. To receive all of salvation’s loaded benefits daily, begin to receive God’s righteousness on His level. Just like you can’t get any benefits without employment, you can’t experience God's quality of life without being in right standing with Him either.
The right side of righteousness explores the well-known phrase “in right standing with God”. Unfortunately, it has been very misleading terminology to many believers. Some think to be righteous is only a title or status, not having a clue of what it really means. It is not just reaching a state of piety as some would suppose, nor is it an unobtainable goal to pursue.
I will lay a foundation for the term righteousness now, but will further explain it before the end of this section. The righteousness of God is receiving the Lord's vision for your total life because you have been declared innocent. When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, He then presents you to God through His shed blood which God graciously accepts. That is what makes you in right standing with God. You are totally covered by the sacrifice Jesus made for sin, so God only sees you in the best possible position in the best possible condition.
The right side of righteousness is simply this: You are highly recognized and accepted in the
Now there are a number of other terms that are an integral part of righteousness, but they are not all inclusive of it. The following terms have been confused with the word "righteous". "Holy" is reserving every room in your heart for God. "Godliness" is giving and receiving honor and respect due. "Purity" is remaining uncontaminated from the world. "Justification" is just as you didn’t sin or miss the mark. "Integrity" is having an impeccable character. "Sanctification" is the process of separation from sin and the world’s way of doing things. "Virtue" is demonstrating the spirit of excellence. "Perfection" is exhibiting the highest level of maturity.
Because Jesus Christ is coming back for a bride that's fitting, God primes us with His Word and His Spirit to ensure we reach His goals. The Word makes us clean when we allow it to wash us thoroughly. The Holy Spirit is readily available to help us walk circumspectly in the revelation of the glorious gospel so we can move about with precision. Ephesians 5:26-25 verifies the kind of bride that Jesus hopes to receive. "...even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify it and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the Word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish."
